Inter Hope To Bolster Midfield

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has announced that coach Roberto Mancini will have funds to strengthen his squad this January.

A defensive midfielder is the main target because of the ongoing injury problems affecting Patrick Vieira and Olivier Dacourt, while defender Walter Samuel (knee) has seemingly been ruled out for the rest of the season.

Moratti said: "To be honest, I did not really want to look at alternatives for the midfield because I had no intention of entering into the market, but now Samuel has injured himself, the conditions are there to consider it.

"There is a dialogue open with (Inter's transfer director Marco) Branca to see what would be the most intelligent move.

"I don't think it could be an Italian player, it could easily be a foreigner."

Moratti wants the player to be available for both European and domestic action. He explained: "He could be useful for both competitions. If he is not able to play in the Champions League, then he will play in Serie A and allow somebody to rest for the cup."
