Gerrard Wants End To Off-Field Saga

Steven Gerrard is desperate for Liverpool to make waves for their business on the pitch, not off it.

The England midfielder eased some of the pressure on manager Rafael Benitez with a hat-trick in the 5-0 defeat of Luton in Tuesday night's FA Cup third round replay at Anfield.

Ryan Babel started the rout with a late first-half goal and Sami Hyypia also got on the scoresheet.

There will be bigger tests ahead in the coming weeks for Benitez, who now knows every result and performance will be scrutinised.

His position has come into question after co-owner Tom Hicks admitted talks were held with Jurgen Klinsmann about becoming the next manager.

While the Spaniard refused to speak about his future after the match, Gerrard was keen to voice his own opinion on the debate.

"It's not about the manager, it's about the team and progressing into the fourth round," he told Sky Sports 2.

"We need to keep winning so the headlines are about the football.

"It's not just about the hat-trick, the win is the most important thing.

"It is important the headlines are about football. Every time we've put the TV on we see what's happening off the pitch."

The capacity crowd warmed to Benitez, who said: "The supporters are amazing but they always have been.

"I would like to talk only about the team and about us winning the game.

"I am really pleased after this match. I know you must ask certain questions but I just want to enjoy the win."

Luton are expected to bank about £200,000 from the game and with the prospect of new owners the future seems bright.

It was announced just hours before the match that a deal had been agreed with a consortium led by television presenter Nick Owen to buy the club.

Outgoing manager Kevin Blackwell, forced to off-load players last week by the administrators, was angry at the way the news came out.

He said: "I did not know he was the preferred bidder until a reporter told me.

"That is why I am very angry about the situation. You do not know what is going on from day to day.

"It might be nice tell the players they might get some wages out of this. They (the administrators) don't seem to think it is important, do they?

"Considering the team we put out, it was a fantastic performance and I am proud of the players."
