Barca Close The Gap

Barcelona closed the gap on Primera Liga leaders Real Madrid to four points with a 2-0 away victory over Mallorca on Saturday night.

After a goalless first half Rafael Marquez finally broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute when he guided home Xavi's inswinging corner at the near post but the hosts proved difficult to shake off.

Thierry Henry had a goal controversially ruled out for offside but deep into stoppage time, Samuel Eto'o capped off a superb team move off with a thunderous strike from outside the box to seal all three points.

Third-placed Espanyol also kept up their title bid with a 3-0 home victory over Villarreal.

Captain Raul Tamudo bagged a brace as the hosts cantered into a three-goal half-time lead.

His goals sandwiched an instinctive finish from Valdo after the ball had come back off the bar.

Espnayol are just a point behind city rivals Barca, but Villarreal's hopes are fading. They are now nine points behind pacesetters Real, who could stretch that gap to 12 by beating Real Zaragoza on Sunday.
